Family, Truth for Today

214 – God’s Greatest Gifts to Grownups

In the aftermath of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut we are made to reflect on our closest relationships and how meaningful they really are to us. In a day when parents think they are too busy to be bothered with a child, we are reminded that they are God’s greatest gifts to grownups. When child care workers and teachers spend more waking with kids than parents do, we are reminded to make our time with them more meaningful and productive than ever. In a land where teen suicide and the irresponsible and depraved behavior of young adults are increasing we are reminded that something valuable is missing in the relationship between parents and the children God has entrusted into our hands.

Today, be reminded that each child God has given to you is a special gift.“Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift[s]? the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?” (Ps. 127:3 The Message). While our society seems to have become less and less God-conscious and while world religions are becoming more and more prevalent, we need to be reminded that there is a God in heaven, and that He is the Creator of every single life. Your children are not interruptions to your plans, they are important participants in the family for which God has made you responsible. When you see your children as gifts from God you will realize that they are not for you to keep, for God has a plan for each one’s life. He will use you to help interpret that plan, instill Christian values, and point them toward the way God has “bent” them to go. Parents are to help aim the “arrows,” the psalmist calls children, in the direction that they should go.

Today, also be reminded that each child is a sacred trust. You have a responsibility to teach them. The primary teachers of kids should not be at school or at church. Parents are to teach their own children, especially about spiritual and valuable subjects that God has equipped you to share through your own personal experience. “Attention, Israel! God, our God! God the one and only! Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates” (Deut. 6:4–9 The Message). We are all in a race, as it were, and we are carrying the baton of the family’s values, love, wealth, hope, and faith. We are to see our children as runners who run alongside us until they are able to grasp the baton of all of that and carry it and pass it on to the next generation. We are always just one generation away from becoming a Godless nation. One generation of parents who fail can make it so. Assume your stewardship responsibility today.

Today, also be reminded to shape your children’s attitudes and actions. The Bible says of Abraham, “Yes, I’ve settled on him as the one to train his children and future family to observe God’s way of life, live kindly and generously and fairly, so that God can complete in Abraham what he promised him”” (Gen. 18:19 The Message). God told Abraham that he was to shape his family’s attitudes and actions. So, what kind of example are you setting for your kids? Social dropouts and deviants are many times the children of parents who failed to be the examples they should have been. It is important to teach children the values of God’s Word.

Today, also be reminded that your kids are searching for the truth. “So, each person is free to follow the convictions of conscience” (Rom. 14:5,The Message). There are both negative and positive convictions about life. You need to have strong Christian convictions and pass them along to your searching child(ren). They need to have a strong apologetic for their faith in the one and only living God. “Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy” (1 Pet. 3:15 The Message). This is not one the Federal Government can or will handle for you parents. This one is for you!

Today, also be reminded that your child is a soul that needs to be saved. “Point your kids in the right direction— when they’re old they won’t be lost” (Prov. 22:6 The Message). While some in the leadership in this country will not stand firm and unwavering on faith in the living God, it is your responsibility as parents to share with your kids the one and only way to eternal life. “Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one”” (Acts 4:12 The Message). Be sure that you know Christ, and then share the way to know Him with your child(ren). Friday should remind us once again of the temporal nature of life and of how important that your child’s spiritual life is!

Your children really are God’s greatest gifts to grownups!
