253 – Facts about Faith

Comments Off on 253 – Facts about Faith 08 February 2013

How much do you know about faith? We talk about it in terms of trust, belief, expectation, hope, among other things. It has to be part of the beginning of our Christian walk. “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (Jn. 1:12 NIV). Without it you cannot please God. “And without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6 NIV). So, it is vital to our Christian walk. Too many people see it as something we pull out and dust off when trying circumstances come our way. It is an escape hatch to which we turn when paralyzed by the experiences of our lives. Let’s learn more about this vital aspect of our Christian walk. Here are some facts about faith!

Fact 1 – Faith deploys when life distresses us. “Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death” (Jn. 4:46–47 NIV). Jesus had been there before and performed a miracle. Word of that miracle spread around. At the time the officer’s son was healthy. But, in the meantime he became sick. The distressing circumstance brought to his father’s mind the story of a Miracle Worker. His faith deployed in the direction where he believed he would find help! We usually turn in faith to God when we have a specific need. God responds to those needs. It is better that we stay close to Him all of the time, so when a need arises it won’t be strange to seek Him.

Fact 2 – Faith directs us to the Helper. “When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death” (Jn. 4:47 NIV). Today Jesus is always near by His Spirit living in us. Our faith can respond immediately because help is here! The Spirit speaks our requests to the Son who intercedes to the Father. That is the process of praying in the Spirit. “And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (Rom. 8:27 NIV). The Spirit aways asks our requests in answerable ways when we allow Him to ask!

Fact 3 – Faith delivers more than we ask. “Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, ‘Your son will live.’ So he and his whole household believed” (Jn. 4:53 NIV). Jesus healed the boy because of his dad’s faith. The dad believed to receive the miracle! Then, his whole house believed. So, he received more than he asked for. The son was healed and all of the people in his house were saved!

Fact 4 – Faith digs in to get the answer. “He went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death” (Jn. 4:47 NIV). He believed and expected an answer from Jesus. Not all answers are “yes” or what we expect them to be. Sometimes God answers in different ways, or as in this case, also at a different time. Sometimes He tests us to prove us true to Himself. This officer passed the test. He was persistent in requesting and expecting. Faith that works waits willingly!

Fact 5 – Faith does get tested. The officer first asked Jesus to come to his home to heal the boy. Jesus didn’t choose to do that. He tested his faith and proved to him that he believed. “Jesus simply replied, ‘Go home. Your son lives.’ The man believed the bare word Jesus spoke and headed home” (Jn. 4:50 The Message). Jesus’ arm of healing is longer than you think. He does not have to be physically present to heal. He works through His Holy Spirit in us these days.

Fact 6 – Faith deepens as we grow in Christ. “Jesus simply replied, “Go home. Your son lives.” The man believed the bare word Jesus spoke and headed home” (Jn. 4:50 The Message). Our faith is not full grown at the beginning of our walk with Christ. Like any maturing process, faith grows over time and with exercise. The faith Jesus saw was real, so He cultivated that faith. It grew! As the officer rested in the words of Christ, his faith deepened. When we rest in what we know and receive instruction in more, we are willing to go on our way trusting in the One who answers our prayers.

Fact 7 – Faith delays panic while the answer is delivered. “On his way back, his servants intercepted him and announced, ‘Your son lives!’ He asked them what time he began to get better. They said, ‘The fever broke yesterday afternoon at one o’clock’” (Jn. 4:51–52 The Message). The officer did not race home to see whether the boy was healed. He took his time until he ran into his servants who he stopped and asked about the son’s healing. He inquired of the time knowing it was when Jesus had pronounced him well. Then, he knew of a certainty that his faith worked!
