Prayer, Truth for Today

325 – A Thanksgiving Reminder for Thanksgiving Day and Every Day

We need to be reminded that thanksgiving is in season at every season of the year. It really is as simple as this, Thanksgiving should lead to thanks-living! Paul wrote for us a reminder in (1 Thess. 5:18 KJV) “in everything give thanks.”  We are to thank God for everything, not just the material blessings. When we are giving thanks we must thank God for all things, large and small, spiritual and material; for “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17 AV). Notice we are to give thanks in everything! That means be thankful even if God is testing us or has engineered some circumstances to help conform us to the image of Christ. In the good times and the had times – “give thanks.” There is nothing in your life, “for good,” that God is not involved in. Therefore, to Him belongs all the praise and thanksgiving for everything.

In Phil. 4:7, Paul told us to make our “supplication with thanksgiving.” That means that we are to be thankful when we ask God for any and every thing. The reason we are to thank God for all things is so we will look back to previous answers and give thanks to God for the way He acted and worked in previous situations. If there is something that is a burden to you today, you can go to God remembering that yesterday or last week or last month you were in the same situation, with the same gnawing anxiety, and you asked God to do something, and He did; so as you thank Him for it, your confidence that He will act again is built up.

In approaching God for new blessings, we should never forget to return thanks for blessings already bestowed. Think of how many times you have offered prayers to God and then, when He answered, you never went back to thank Him. We need to learn to be just as diligent in going back to thank God as we are in asking Him for His blessings in the first place. What better time than THANKSGIVING DAY to begin thanking, and never stop?
