God's Truth About..., Personal Growth, Truth for Today

Comments Off on 364 – TODAY IS A BIG DAY! 22 August 2014

A lot is made of the “Big Days” in our lives. Some people live for the “Big Days,” when they think something special is going to happen. Sometimes big things are scheduled and people get all excited and make preparations for what they believe is going to be special. We get all excited about the “Big Day” when our football team begins its season. It’s a “big deal” when we anticipate a promotion at work or  raise. We are motivated to get up and go when we think something special is going to occur or that we will see someone who is special to us. But, are we missing the bigness of each day that God gives us life?

I am reminded of Joe DiMaggio’s quote regarding big baseball games, “You look forward to it like a birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” I agree with him that big days are special. But why must we wait for a “Big Day?” Why not look for each day to be a “Big Day.”

Baseball players who are serious about the game have to learn to look for something special to happen each time they walk to the plate. Let me ask you a question: “What do you expect to happen when you step up to the plate each day in your marriage, career, and other important commitments in your life?” The reason I ask you that is because whatever you think is going to happen probably will happen. If you think, “Nothing will come of this appointment.” Nothing will! If you think, “My marriage will never get any better than it is.” It won’t! If you think something wonderful is going to happen, get ready, it probably will. Paul in Scripture said, “So be careful how you act; … Don’t be fools; be wise: make the most of every opportunity you have for doing good” (Eph. 5:16 LB). He was saying that we should seize every opportunity God gives us for making our day a “big one.”

Most people don’t realize, until it is too late, that each day in our lives is a “Big Day.” Each time we step up to an opportunity we should expect something wonderful to happen. But, we ask, “What if I don’t hit a home run?” The good baseball player does not quit when he strikes out. He knows that the way out of a hitting slump is to go back to the plate expecting something good to happen next time. As one player commented, “I keep on swinging.”

I read another quote that says, “Baseball is made up of very few big and dramatic moments, but rather it’s a beautifully put together pattern of countless little subtleties that finally add up to the big moment.” You’re not going to hit a home run every time you go to the plate. You may never hit one. That is not the important thing. It is how you respond when you don’t, what you make of the opportunity, and that you keep on going to the plate that matter. It’s getting it right as many times as you can until it adds up to a winning season in your life commitment.

In all that you do, expect something wonderful to happen. It probably will! Do what you choose to do each day well and enjoy your experience of the big moment of victory that results. You owe God, yourself, and others on your team your best today! Today is a “Big Day!”
